Welcome to the adventure region North Eifel
and the Eifel National Park
The North Eifel region in Kreis Euskirchen with its towns, Euskirchen, Mechernich and Kommern, Schleiden and the Kneipp health resort Gemund, Zülpich and the communities of Hellenthal, Kall and Weilerswist have a lot to offer for exciting and, at the same time, relaxing stays.
Under the motto “letting nature be nature” visitors of the Eifel National Park are offered unrivalled wonders of nature. Find all this on exciting and varied walks through impressive beech forests and along romantic stream beds, surrounded by spectacular views.
One particular place is the former NS”Ordensburg” Vogelsang, that has only been open to visitors since the 1st January, 2006. The vision for this area, formally used for military purposes for decades, is to create an International Place Vogelsang in the centre of the Eifel National Park. Discover the listed buildings on the sign- posted round tours, or let dedicated qualified speakers show you around the grounds.
We also recommend the numerous events in the Eifel National Park, for example the ranger- guided tours. The 313 kilometres long Eifelsteig from Aachen to Trier offers unusual hiking adventures, which you can discover in two stages between Einruhr near the Lake Rursee, Gemünd and Steinfeld monastery near Kall. The Eifelsteig can be combined with the two adventure routes “Rur-Olef-Route” and “Castle-Route”.
If you like to be active, but would rather cycle, you can also have a wonderful time here. Because the topography of the region goes from the typical MIttelgebirge landscape in the south changing to grassy plains in the north, all cyclists, whether trekkers, mountain bikers or racing cyclists, can find a suitable route. And of course this also includes families with children and leisure cyclists. Numerous themed routes like the Eifel Heights Route or the valley routes along the rivers are the best examples for the widely spread cycle path network between Hellenthal and Weilerswist.
The troubled past of the region with its beginnings in the Roman era has left its mark here. We recommend a visit to the Roman Thermal Springs in Zülpich, the castles in Reifferscheid and Wildenburg near Hellenthal, the monastery with its basilica in Steinfeld or one of our moated castles. Fascinating mining relicts can be seen in the Mining Museums in Mechernich and Hellenthal. To round this off are the LVR Open-Air Museum in Kommern, the LVR Industrial Museum near Euskirchen and the Hellenthal Game Reserve, which are all well worth seeing.
All year round there are tempting activities, or simple relaxation: from four star hotels to country guesthouses, from cosy boarding houses or holiday homes, to farm holidays- there is something for everyone to match every taste and budget. Whether a day, a week or even longer we look forward to the time we can spend with you.
Welcome. The North Eifel is easily accessible by car, less than an hour’s drive from the urban areas around the Rhine and Aachen.
Eifelsteig, Wildnis-Trail, Milchweg ...
