The North Eifel region in Kreis Euskirchen -with its towns Euskirchen, Zülpich, Mechernich including Kommern, Schleiden with the Kneipp spa Gemünd, also the communities of Blankenheim, Hellenthal, Kall, Nettersheim and Weilerswist-has a lot to offer for exciting and at the same time relaxing short or longer stays.

The Eifel National Park offers visitors an unrivalled nature adventure under the motto “letting nature be nature”. Find all this on exciting and varied walks through impressive beech forests and along romantic stream beds, surrounded by spectacular views.

An interesting place to see is the former NS “Ordensburg” Vogelsang in the centre of the Eifel National Park. Discover the listed buildings on the sign-posted circular tours, or take a guided tour around the grounds.

The 313 kilometre long Eifelsteig from Aachen to Trier and the 116 kilometre long Roman Canal walk from Nettersheim to Cologne offer you special hiking tours. You can find these excellent walks and also other attractive hiking and walking tips in our free hiking pocket guides.

If you prefer to cycle you can also have a wonderful time here. Because the region’s topography ranges from typical Mittelgebirg landscape of gentle hills in the south to the flatter grassy plains of the North, all types of cyclists can find suitable routes in the attractive network of cycle paths in the excellent bike-friendly Kreis Euskirchen. Attractive route suggestions are in the free cycle brochure “Fahrradtouren in der Nordeifel”. We recommend tours with Pedelecs (E-bikes), which you can rent at numerous places, to help master the steeper climbs.

The troubled past has left its special mark on the region. Visit the Roman thermals in Zülpich, the castles in Reifferscheid and Wildenburg near Hellenthal, the monastery with its basilica in Steinfeld or the Eifel Museum in Blankenheim. Fascinating relics of the mining industry can be seen in the mining museums of Mechernich and near Hellenthal. To round this off we recommend the LVR Open-Air Museum in Kommern, the LVR Industrial Museum of Euskirchen with the Müller cloth factory, the Nature Centre in Nettersheim, the atomic fall-out shelter near Kall and our wildlife parks.
